Surveillance of Canada's far-flung Arctic territories in the interests of national sovereignty is only one of the functions of the Canadian Armed Forces serving in the north. This is a vivid account of what is involved in patrolling the 386 square kilometer territory and also the many and varied ways in which the Armed Services use their experience and expertise to assist civilian authorities in northern development, research, and environmental protection.
