The people most qualified to talk about heroin are the addicts and ex-addicts themselves. They know what it is to live in constant fear, to be rejected, outcast, perpetually vulnerable. Each story is different, but with a common anguish. "I hate being an addict," they say, but for most their desperation is mitigate by the heroin high and their faith in the next fix.
