Harnessing the Monsoons
Top of page
Description
In a pilot project in Sri Lanka's dry zone, agricultural researchers have shown how to double and even triple food crops through the development of new rice varieties and revised planting schedules that take advantage of the monsoon rains that fill the water reservoir in the village of Walagambahuwa. This film records a rare partnership between modern science and ancient agricultural know-how, presenting a model of rural development that is being copied in many other villages throughout Sri Lanka's dry zone.
