Ukrainians on the Prairies

Two portraits of Ukrainians and their contributions to life in Canada. Ted Baryluk's Grocery: Ukrainian-Canadian Ted Baryluk's grocery store has been a fixture in Winnipeg's north end for over twenty years; he wonders what will become of his store after he retires. He hopes his daughter, Helen, will take over, but she wants to move away (10 min. 19 sec.). Laughter in My Soul: Living in Winnipeg, cartoonist, painter, humorist, publisher, iconographer, and teacher, Jacob Maydanyk was part of the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants who arrived in Canada between 1896-1914 and settled primarily in the Prairies. But his is not a typical immigrant's story, for the comic strip character he created, "Shteef Tabachniuk," became a folk hero among the Ukrainian immigrants (27 min. 50 sec.).
