McLaren: The Young Professional 1936-1939

This compilation includes films made by Norman McLaren from 1936-1939: Book Bargain: A novel attempt to inject some interest into the production of the London telephone directory (9 min.); News for the Navy: A documentary-style account of how a letter from home reaches a sailor on duty in foreign waters (10 min.); Mony a Pickle: A short film publicizing the G.P.O. (General Post Office) Savings Bank. Several film directors contributed short sequences (10 min. 32 sec.); Love on the Wing: Continually metamorphosing symbols drawn directly on 35 mm film stock are used in this film for the General Post Office Film Unit of Great Britain, publicizing the U.K. air-mail service (4 min. 18 sec.); and The Obedient Flame: This documentary, using both live-action photography and animation, shows the advantages of cooking with gas. Produced by John Grierson for the British Gas Corporation, it was the last film Norman McLaren made in the United Kingdom (9 min. 57 sec.).
