The Mother of Rivers

Top of page

The source of the Thompson, Fraser, Columbia, Athabasca and Saskatchewan rivers is the Columbia Icefield. Within an hour's drive from Jasper, it may be viewed from the road that goes right to the base of the glacier. Horseback riding, skiing and sunbathing are popular pastimes on the lower slopes, while the more skilled and adventurous may choose to scale the ice walls with crampons and ice axes. This awe-inspiring extent of ice and snow attracts visitors from around the world.
