Constructing Reality: Exploring Media Issues in Documentary - Voices of Experience, Voices for Change Part 1
Constructing Reality is designed to stimulate students to critically examine documentary filmmaking, television and culture. Whose stories get told in the media? Who tells them? What role has documentary filmmaking played in giving people a voice in their society? This selection of seven films presents voices from the margins, the perceptions and experiences of people who challenge mainstream portrayals of their situation. The films also demonstrate the role of the Canadian documentary as a vehicle for reclaiming and celebrating cultural and social histories, identities and voices. A resource book which includes teaching strategies, discussion questions, hands-on activities, as well as notes on the technical aspects of filmmaking and on the ethical questions and creative choices behind every documentary film is available.
