Perspectives in Science 2 - Soil
This thought-provoking program consists of five chapters: a short drama plus four sections which explore the development and function of soil, as well as the impact of farming and society on soil sustainability. The drama, A Last Crop of Houses, focuses on the sale of a family farm to suburban real estate developers. The father and son strongly disagree on the ethics, effects and economics of the sale. In Chapters 2-5, the development and use of farm equipment is investigated, as well as strategies and technologies for soil preparation, seeding, crop management and crop yields. Alternatives to established farming practices, such as organic farming and the use of horse-driven equipment, are looked at in the light of research pertinent to soil degradation, sustainability and society's needs and expectations.
