Six videos showing the impact of resource exploitation and of Canada's efforts to assert sovereignty over the Arctic. Volume 1 contains: Arctic Coal Mine (3 min. 40 sec.) (Part of Eye Witness No. 68) Made in 1954, this video shows how every summer the men of Pond Inlet went from being hunters to miners--spending two to three weeks working a surface seam of coal that provided income for the community. (1954) People of the Rock (13 min. 30 sec.) A portrait of the intersection of two cultures at a nickel mine in North Rankin. Fascinating, more for what it reveals about the attitudes of southerners towards the local Inuit than for its look at mining. (1961) Search into White Space (16 min. 26 sec.) A slightly tongue-in-cheek look at efforts to locate the North's mineral and fossil fuel reserves--small pockets in an enormous territory. (1970)
