In Celebration of Nunavut - Life in the Settlements - Volume 5 - Donald and Winifred Marsh's Missionary Encounter with the Padlimiut
Description
Nine videos documenting Inuit resilience in the change from nomadic to settled life. Volume 5 contains: Donald and Winifred Marsh's Missionary Encounter with the Padlimiut (43 min. 33 sec.) This video features the reminiscences of missionaries Donald and Winifred Marsh, who lived in and around Eskimo Point (now Arviat) between 1926 and 1943. Together they ran a church and a school, and provided medical care. Donald's photos and films, along with Winifred's journals and beautiful watercolours, bring to life the now-lost customs of the area's Padlimiut Inuit. The first part of this video focuses on Winifred's experience as a newcomer to the North. The second part is told primarily from Donald's point of view--including the period during which he travelled widely and learned traditional Padlimiut ways. (1996)
