Top of page

This extraordinary series is a record of the traditional way of life of the Netsilik people, through the seasons of the year. Presented with no commentary or music, these videos are in Inuktitut, with no subtitles. Volume 6 contains: At the Winter Sea Ice Camp: Part 1 (35 min. 40 sec.) March and April. Men and women build igloos. The men harness dogs and pack sleds in preparation for seal hunting. At the hunting spot, the dogs sniff out seal breathing holes, then the men wait patiently. When a large seal is captured, the hunters share a bit of meat. (1967); At the Winter Sea Ice Camp: Part 2 (36 min. 16 sec.) There is lots of laughter as children play games--hitting a ball with a stick, juggling, pretending to hunt--while women sew, care for pelts and repair igloos. The men continue to catch seals and bring them back to the camp. (1967) Some graphic hunting footage. Please preview before use.
