L'action de ce film de fiction, se situe en 1770, dans un petit village ojibway de la baie géorgienne, dans le Nord-Ouest canadien. Ikwe raconte l'histoire d'une jeune autochtone qui, après avoir fait un rêve prémonitoire, a cru changer son destin et celui de sa tribu en épousant un trappeur écossais. La leçon sera amère mais porteuse d'espoir pour la survie d'un peuple menacé d'extinction.
