ExtraOrdinary Lives - Episode 3 - Triumph
RCMP Constable Laurie White woke up in a Vancouver hospital and discovered that the lower part of her right leg had been amputated following 8 hours of emergency surgery. The day before, she'd attempted to execute a search warrant on a suspected sexual offender. The suspect shot her through the door of his home with a sawed-off 303 rifle and then shot himself. Laurie snubbed the desk job that was offered her and fought back to become the first Canadian to return to active RCMP duty with a prosthetic limb.
In 1997, a virus inflamed Danalyn's 25-year-old heart and left doctors no choice but to perform a transplant. A runner since childhood, Danalyn became determined to race again. Her triumphant return came when she ran the 2000 Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line to hug her donor's sister, and become the first female heart transplant recipient to complete a 26 mile race.
