ExtraOrdinary Lives - Episode 8 - Charity
In 1976, Lois Gibbs is a mild-mannered housewife in the city of Niagara Falls. All of that changes when she discovers that her neighbourhood is built on top of a toxic dumpsite named Love Canal. Her own son is sick. Mysterious illnesses plague nearby families. Almost overnight, Lois becomes a fierce crusader, spearheading the demands of local residents. Her dramatic leadership brings President Jimmy Carter to her door with funds to evacuate 900 families and begin the environmental clean-up.
As a young woman, Naomi Bronstein leaves Canada to help children in war-torn Vietnam. In 1975, she is involved in "Operation Babylift", a plan to fly orphans to North America for adoption. After giving up her own seat, she watches as the plane full of children crashes soon after takeoff. Shattered and depressed, Naomi worries that she may never be able to work with children again. However, driven to make a difference, she eventually forms Healing the Children, an organization that has now helped more than 70,000 children worldwide receive medical care.
