Inside the Hothouse 3 takes a playful look into the creation process and frenzy behind the third iteration of the NFB Animation Hothouse. This is a zippy, "MTV-ready" mini-documentary, reflective of the youthful iconoclasm of the six emerging filmmakers and Jason Lee, the documentary director. The filmmakers and their collaborators offer candid insight into the nature and process of auteur animation filmmaking at the NFB, and the excitement and fear of making a first professional film. The NFB Animation Hothouse description sums it all up: "Take six promising animation filmmakers from across Canada, plant them in the NFB's English Animation Studio, give them 12 weeks to create extremely short animation from concept to release with the full support and assistance of NFB creative experts and, voilà, the NFB Animation Hothouse!"
This year's edition of Hothouse was mentored by Shira Avni, director of John and Michael. The participants were Elisabeth Belliveau and Patrick Doyon (Montreal), Damien Hess (Yellowknife), Anne Koizumi (Calgary), Rachel Peters (Toronto) and Kelly Sommerfeld (Saskatchewan).
The DVD also includes mini bios of the directors, as well as still images taken from the individual Hothouse 3 films. Also included is a group picture of the directors.
