Volatile Materials/Matières vives

Post-McLaren abstract animation.

Rhythms, textures, lines and splashes of colour are the protagonists in these nine contemporary abstract animation films. Playful or flashy, mysterious or disconcerting, they clearly stand out in the landscape of current animation. Going beyond trends and conventions, the filmmakers featured in Volatile Materials approach animation from a visual arts perspective, transforming matter in order to free it from reality’s illusions. These artists also share the experience of making films with a privileged and striking relationship to music. The variety of sound matches the visual diversity, and Volatile Materials lays to rest the notion that abstract films are all the same.

Bonus features:
Commentaries by animation experts Marco de Blois, Pierre Hébert and Marcel Jean and a 32-page bilingual booklet.
