Over the past 30 years, Bertrand Carrière has shaped a photographic oeuvre that is at once personal and varied. A documentary photographer, he is interested in the memory and history of places.

So when he inherited a mysterious album of World War I photographs, Bertrand Carrière decided to inspire a rendezvous with history, and set off on the trail of Fletcher Wade Moses, owner of the album. Crisscrossing sites transformed by war and meeting Wade's heirs, Carrière's quest led him through the broken terrain of a memory at once so near yet so far.
