2012/06/21

Montreal, June 21, 2012―The National Film Board of Canada's interactive productions have won their first-ever award at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (June 17 to 23, 2012) with a Cyber Lion Award for the NFB interactive documentary Bear 71 ( nfb.ca/bear71). The Gold Cyber Lion for Bear 71 is going to web design firm Jam3 (Pablo Vio, Creative Director) of Toronto, in the category of Charities, Public Health & Safety, Public Awareness Messages, following an announcement in Cannes on June 21.

Bear 71 was created by Jeremy Mendes, Leanne Allison and the NFB. Bear 71 was written by J.B. MacKinnon and voiced by Mia Kirshner. Aubyn Freybe-Smith designed the site and Jam3 (Pablo Vio, Creative Director) did interactive design and programming. Bear 71 was produced by Loc Dao, Bonnie Thompson and Dana Dansereau. The project was executive produced by Dao, Rob McLaughlin and David Christensen. Bear 71 is a co-production between the NFB's Digital Studio in Vancouver and its Northwest Centre, based in Edmonton.

It's just the latest interactive media honour for NFB interactive works. Last month, Canada's public producer added two more Webby Awards— the Internet's highest honour—for a total of six Webbys in just five years.

Now in its 59th season, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is the world's most prestigious international creative communications awards, with over 28,000 entries from all over the world.
