NFB animation pioneer Norman McLaren’s legacy of innovation and artistic excellence lives on at the Academy Award®-winning Animation Studio he founded in 1941, in its people and its projects. Located in Montreal, the Animation Studio, exceptionally, has a national mandate to work with singular and inventive artists and filmmakers from across Canada.
The Studio has been a creative laboratory since its inception, and continues that legacy today, but with a modern, interdisciplinary approach to exploring animation art, and pushing its bounds in many directions. Working at the Animation Studio means being part of an artistic community where filmmakers and their creative collaborators are supported in realising their vision, without compromises, where new and emerging animators work alongside many of Canada’s most accomplished filmmakers, and where ideas and expertise are shared and celebrated.
The Animation Studio is accelerating the development of new talent from across the country through its Hothouse program for emerging filmmakers, and in its work with young and veteran women filmmakers and creators from diverse cultural communities. The studio maintains a unique global distinction through its many international co-productions with partners from around the world.
