Jullien Philippe
Born in France in 1964, Philippe Jullien started out studying science but switched to fine arts and discovered animation. He experimented with various techniques before deciding on puppet animation as his preferred medium.
His filmmaking career debuted in 1989 with Jean-Pierre Lemouland, founder of JPL Films in Brittany. As co-writer, set designer and animator, Jullien he worked on the short films Vincent and Rêve de lumières. He also worked on the sets of various TV series.
In 1998, he directed his first short animated film, Le Cyclope de la mer, which garnered numerous awards on the international festival circuit and made his name in France and abroad. He then made Sans autre t'es rien and Tadeus (co-directed with Jean-Pierre Lemouland) for the anti-racism series Pas d'histoires! produced by d.f.c.r. (dire, faire contre le racisme). Bolstered by this experience, he undertook his most ambitious project to date, Ruzz & Ben, in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada. Jullien's films are marked by the pervasive presence of natural elements such as wind and water, as well as compassion for society's more marginal members.
