Benjamin Sobaz
Sobaz Benjamin studied film at Toronto's York University and was awarded an apprenticeship for direction from the National Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in 2001. He served his apprenticeship with Triad Films in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has since completed two independent shorts exploring identity and is currently working with CBC.
Whether he finds himself with a group of 12-year-old students facilitating a workshop on stereotypes or DJing a local community radio show, Sobaz is committed to storytelling. Story lies at the heart of his craft. "I strive to take an audience to a place they haven't been before. That is my goal as a filmmaker."
Born in London, England and after spending much of his teenage years in Grenada, Sobaz immigrated to Canada in 1990. He now makes Halifax his home with his wife and two children.
Race is a Four-Letter Word (2006) is his first long form documentary.
