This compilation includes films made by Norman McLaren (working alone and in collaboration) from 1961-1971: New York Lightboard Record: A record of New Yorkers watching Norman McLaren's New York Lightboard animation in action high over Times Square (9 min.); Lines - Horizontal: Lines, ruled directly on film, move with precision and grace against a background of changing colours, in response to specially composed music (5 min. 58 sec.); Canon: In a canon each singer picks up the words and tune a beat or so after the preceding singer. This is a demonstration by animation and live action of how a canon works (9 min. 13 sec.); Mosaic: An example of 'op' art in film, a play on the retina of the eye, the basis of this film is a single tiny square that divides, eventually forming a colourful mosaic (5 min. 27 sec.); Pas de deux: By exposing the same frames as many as ten times, McLaren creates a multiple image of the ballerina Margaret Mercier, and her partner, Vincent Warren (13 min. 22 sec.); Spheres: Spheres seem to float in the sky, at times colliding in an atomic chain reaction set to the music of Bach, played by pianist Glenn Gould (7 min. 28 sec.); and Synchromy: Novel optical techniques compose the piano rhythms of the sound track which appears on the picture area of the screen so that you see what you hear (7 min. 27 sec.).
