Haut de la page

This extraordinary series is a record of the traditional way of life of the Netsilik people, through the seasons of the year. Presented with no commentary or music, these videos are in Inuktitut, with no subtitles. Volume 8 contains: Building a Kayak: Part 1 (32 min. 20 sec.) July. Two men build a wooden kayak frame while a woman cuts and shapes the skins that will cover it. Once the basic frame is assembled, the men soak and bend wood for the ribs. Afterwards, the men spear fish, and everyone sits down to a meal. (1967); Building a Kayak: Part 2 (32 min. 46 sec.) Kayak building continues in this video filled with images of the Arctic summer's beauty. The men attach the last of the ribs. The skins and shell are then soaked in the sea, and the adults stretch the skin onto the frame. The finished kayak is launched--it paddles beautifully. (1967)
